Dr. Elen Harlow adjusted her mask, the stale air of the subterranean archive pressing against her skin. She was the last historian, tasked with extracting knowledge from the ancient servers buried beneath the irradiated surface. Today, she had found something anomalous—files labeled “Protocol: Dawn.”
She activated the holograms. Footage played: A Council deliberating, their words sharp. “The world is failing. We either leave billions behind or perish together.”
A sinking weight clenched Elen’s chest. Their ancestors had chosen to abandon Earth, sealing the rich data vaults behind them. The surface hadn’t burned by accident. It had been erased.
Her comms crackled. “Elen, come in. Any findings?”
She hesitated. If she released the truth, it could fracture the fragile underground colonies. But wasn’t truth their purpose?
Hands trembling, she pressed a command. The vault’s speakers activated, history pouring into the silence.
