Dr. Yara Venn adjusted her helmet, the whisper of sand against the dome of New Sable Station thick in her ears. The sky above—an endless purple haze—was streaked with the flickering lights of a failing orbital tether.
She had built that tether.
A warning beacon pulsed red on her visor. The tether’s core would collapse in minutes, sending molten debris onto the settlement below. New Sable’s thousand inhabitants had no idea.
Her comm crackled. “Doctor Venn, there’s no time—evacuate!”
She exhaled. “No.”
With shaking hands, she rerouted power from the station’s reactor, stabilizing the tether—at a cost. The settlement’s energy reserves plummeted. The streetlights flickered out.
Then, silence. The tether held.
As emergency lanterns sparked to life, voices rose in relief. Yara collapsed, exhausted. She had sacrificed their comfort, their safety net—but she had given them time. Time to build, time to connect, time to survive.
