Dr. Liora Venn adjusted her filtration mask as she stepped onto the dust-slicked balcony of the floating city of Atheris, suspended above an endless desert storm. Aetheric miners below harvested ionized particles, fueling the last remnants of civilization. But the storm walls were thickening.
She had modeled the currents a hundred times—Atheris would sink within days. Governor Sevan refused evacuation, believing stability could be restored. Liora’s hands trembled as she clutched the data slate, knowing escape pods wouldn’t hold everyone.
A voice broke her thoughts—Ren, an old friend. He smiled, holding out a second earpiece. “We can reroute the mining arrays to stabilize the fields—together.”
Liora hesitated. It was dangerous, untested. But isolation had built the crisis, and only trust could defy the inevitable. She met his gaze, then took the earpiece.
By dawn, the winds shifted.
