Stasis Reckoning

The air in the Glass Warren shimmered with refracted neon, its domed corridors laced with algae tubes recycling oxygen. Miko, a cartographer of abandoned tunnels, traced a vein of forgotten power lines, his scanner chirping as it picked up a signal—human, but old.

He followed it to a sealed door, one not marked on any map. A manual override later, it hissed open. Inside, stasis pods lined the walls, their inhabitants frozen in time. One remained active. The occupant stirred—eyes opening, breath catching.

“How long?” she rasped.

Miko checked his device. “Two hundred years.”

She swallowed hard. “Mission failure, then.”

Miko hesitated. “Depends on the mission.”

Her eyes met his, calculating. “You could leave me here.”

He studied the lifeless pods around them. “Or we figure it out. Together.”

Outside, the city pulsed, unaware that history had just woken.
