The dust storm howled outside the last greenhouse on Mars. Dr. Elin Kade checked the oxygen levels; dwindling again. The filtration modules were failing.
She activated the drone, Patch, to inspect the vents. Patch beeped, pulsing its dim blue light. “Report?” she asked. A garbled chime. Damage beyond repair.
Her radio crackled. “Elin, we can’t hold on much longer,” came Jonas’s voice from the failing hab unit.
She hesitated, then turned to the plants. Hundreds of terraformed hybrids, each programmed to survive Mars’ hostile air. She placed her trembling hands on the roots of the tallest.
“Override protocol,” she whispered.
The plants shuddered and exhaled—more oxygen than programmed. The alarm stilled. Patch’s light flickered in confusion.
Hours later, Jonas arrived, gasping at the purified air. “How?”
Elin looked at the vines curling toward her, pulsing faintly. They had listened.
“They adapted,” she said. “And so will we.”
