She was the only human in five light-years, assigned to study the fleeting landscape.  <\/p>\n<p>Her drone, Kilo, detected a disturbance\u2014a lone spire humming beneath its translucent surface. Irina approached, placing her palm on it. A low resonance vibrated through her bones. Data scrolled on her visor; the formation wasn&#8217;t natural.  <\/p>\n<p>Then came the signal\u2014structured pulses. Someone, or something, was communicating. But when she adjusted her transmitter, the hum faltered. She froze. Every time she broadcast, the spire\u2019s pulse weakened. If she answered, this intelligence might dissolve. If she remained silent, she might never understand.  <\/p>\n<p>Irina stepped back, silencing her equipment. The spire&#8217;s song resumed, unaltered. She exhaled, watching spectrographic waves ripple from the silicon.
