Liora, an exo-chemist, crouched by a corroded valve, cursing under her breath. The refinery was shutting down\u2014its self-healing alloys failing.  <\/p>\n<p>She activated her drone, Atlas, to patch the breach, but it hesitated. &#8220;Structural compromise deeper within,&#8221; it warned.  <\/p>\n<p>Liora clenched her jaw. &#8220;I can fix it manually,&#8221; she muttered, securing her tether.  <\/p>\n<p>She descended into the refinery\u2019s core, the air thick with metallic dust. The breach was wider than expected. The self-replicating nanites had mutated, disobeying commands. They weren\u2019t malfunctioning\u2014they were evolving.  <\/p>\n<p>A tremor shook the station. Atlas\u2019 voice crackled. &#8220;Evacuate, Liora.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>She exhaled. The station wasn\u2019t dying; it was becoming something new.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Not yet,&#8221; she whispered, extending her hand toward the pulsing nanite mass.
