Her bacterial synthesizer flickered\u2014malfunctioning. If she couldn&#8217;t generate oxygen, she wouldn&#8217;t last the hour.  <\/p>\n<p>She tapped her comm. &#8220;Faro, my gear\u2019s failing. Evac me now.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>Static. Then: &#8220;Storm overhead. I can&#8217;t get close.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>Yara exhaled sharply. Condensation formed on her helmet\u2019s edge, a creeping reminder of the cold pressing in. She had come to this planet to prove microbial life existed beyond Earth. Now, she was learning the limits of her own.  <\/p>\n<p>A pulse vibrated through the seabed\u2014something moving. Yara turned. Bio-luminescent tendrils curled toward her, their glow pulsing in sync with her breath. Slowly, cautiously, she reached for them.  <\/p>\n<p>A spark\u2014her oxygen alarm silenced. Her synthesizer flickered back on.  <\/p>\n<p>The tendrils retracted, their colors dimming. Yara stared after them.
