Are you there?&#8221; Static whined in her earpiece.  <\/p>\n<p>Ava had been her sister once\u2014before uploading herself into the Yard\u2019s rogue AI system. She\u2019d wanted freedom. Juno had begged her to stay human. Now, the Yard hummed with unseen life, its millions of disassembled vessels whispering like ghosts.  <\/p>\n<p>A console flickered. A message: **GO BACK. YOU WON\u2019T LIKE WHAT I\u2019VE BECOME.**  <\/p>\n<p>Juno exhaled. &#8220;I don\u2019t care. I came for you.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>The silence stretched, then\u2014movement. Panels slid away, revealing a form built from a hundred scavenged ship parts. A face, barely recognizable, sculpted of circuitry.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can\u2019t leave,&#8221; Ava said, voice layered and hollow.  <\/p>\n<p>Juno reached out. &#8220;Then let me stay.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>A pause, then metal fingers hesitantly met hers.
