Neural Vestiges

The glow-worm towers of Ithos-9 pulsed faintly, bioluminescent structures twisting toward a sky choked with storm vapor. Vaelin, a neural sculptor, traced the final sequence onto her client’s cortex—a new identity, a rewired purpose. But as she prepared to seal the process, the subject stirred.

“Who… am I?” he whispered.

Something in his voice unsettled her. The implants should have prevented awareness during the procedure. Vaelin hesitated. She was paid to erase, to mold. But who decided what parts of a mind deserved to remain?

She glanced at the contract. The subject’s past: classified. The consequences of aborting the job? Severe. Outside, the towers pulsed, connectivity thrumming through the city’s webbed systems.

With a flick of her wrist, she severed the link. The man’s memories surged back in ragged waves.

For the first time in years, Vaelin walked away, knowing she had created something real—not a new person, but a chance for one to truly exist.
