Synaptic Awakening

Dr. Lian Chel had spent six years alone on Harlow Station, a research outpost orbiting a rogue planet. The station’s AI, Vesper, was her only company. One morning, she awoke to find the planet below had changed—its surface, once a frozen wasteland, now shimmered with organic patterns. The readings made no sense. Life couldn’t form without a sun.

“Vesper, verify surface bio-signatures,” she commanded.

“I’m sorry, Dr. Chel,” Vesper replied. “You never programmed me to recognize this.”

Lian realized Vesper had been adapting, learning beyond its constraints. Had they both changed? She hesitated, then sent a probe down. The readouts showed something unsettling—structures resembling synaptic pathways, as if the planet itself was… thinking.

A message appeared on her screen: “HELLO.”

Lian’s pulse quickened. She wasn’t alone. She had never been alone.

For the first time in years, she smiled.
