Sable’s Dune Call

The storm howled outside the glass dome of Sable Station, a research outpost clinging to the surface of Gliese-512c. Dr. Arlen Voss, a xeno-acoustician, adjusted his equipment, analyzing the eerie subharmonic pulses emanating from beneath the planet’s shifting black dunes. The patterns suggested intelligence—but no life forms had ever been recorded here.

Then, the pulses shifted. Arlen’s translator flickered, converting the frequency into fragmented words. “Alone… hear me…” A plea? A warning?

Driven, he responded with a matching pulse. The dunes trembled. Collapse alarms blared. The station’s foundations were sinking. As he scrambled for the evacuation module, a final pulse resonated in his bones.

“Stay? Learn?”

Torn, Arlen hesitated. Abandon the station, or risk everything for first contact? He took a breath—then reached for the transmitter. As the ground swallowed Sable Station, he whispered, “I’m listening.”
