Dr. Solis adjusted his oxygen mask as he stepped into the whispering chasm—an ancient, sentient canyon on the exoplanet Vorthis-9. Hired to map its shifting walls, he instead found himself drawn to its murmured warnings.
“The storm is coming,” it sighed. “Leave.”
Solis hesitated. His contract forbade superstition, but the chasm’s movements had saved him from a rockslide yesterday. Today, it groaned like a wounded creature. He placed a hand on the vibrating stone.
“What storm?”
The very ground lurched. Wind howled from nowhere, twisting the air into something thick and charged. The canyon walls rippled, narrowing.
Solis turned to run, but the path behind him had vanished. Panic surged. He was one breath from calling for rescue when he paused.
“The way out?” he asked.
The chasm exhaled, shifting. A new path unfolded ahead. Trusting it, Solis sprinted forward.
As he reached open sky, the chasm sealed behind him. He looked back, shivering. Connection, he realized, was not just between people.
