Vinebound Entropy

The Aether Reef stretched endlessly above Rosalyn, a tangled expanse of glowing, crystalline vines drifting in the stratosphere. Rosalyn, a quantum gardener, carefully guided her drone shears through the delicate filaments. A single mistake could destabilize the oxygen-seeding cycle for Earth’s recovering atmosphere.

As she worked, her visor pinged with an anomaly. A distinct tone—a signal pulsing faintly from within the reef. Her orders were clear: trim, repair, move on. But curiosity outweighed protocol. Steering her capsule closer, Rosalyn discovered a sphere suspended in the vines, its surface shifting like liquid metal.

The signal grew louder as she approached, and a voice filled her mind.

“Help us.”

The sphere rippled and revealed frozen faces—human faces—captive in its depths. Rosalyn recoiled. The Aether Reef was thought to be an organic machine, but now… now it screamed of something more. Was this relic repairing the atmosphere or harvesting consciousness?

Her hand hovered over the detonation module for the reef’s anchor. Destroying it could free them—or doom Earth’s fragile recovery.

She shut her visor. The shears moved.
