Memoryweaver Codex

The amber clouds of Vortin Reef swirled against the transparent skyshield. Elen, a neurocartographer, floated in her auto-cocoon above the reef’s bio-field—a living map of the planet’s collective memories. She was tasked with extracting the memories for research, but one pulsing strand caught her attention, a single glowing arc of emotion intertwined with pain.

Curious, she linked in. It wasn’t a memory of the reef’s fauna or flora but a human imprint: scattered moments of laughter, embraces, and the sharp agony of loss—someone long gone. The reef had absorbed it from one of the first settlers. Elen was always told—commanded—that memory extraction was for analysis only. Emotional response was a liability.

Yet, surrounded by the raw ache of someone else’s life, she hesitated. Elen felt the pull to leave a piece of herself behind, to fill the void left by the settler’s despair. It was unsanctioned and decidedly irrational, but she knew the bio-field would never forget her. With trembling thought, she encoded her own joy into the reef, a pulse of connection bridging the unknown.
