Memory Frost

The methane storms had passed, leaving the glass spires of Ardent Reef coated in shimmering frost. Liora, a memory architect, linked into the lattice, her neural threads flickering through the dying consciousness of the colony’s founder. Dr. Venn had encoded his final thoughts into the core, but something was wrong—fragments of his mind disintegrated before she could preserve them.

“You altered the cipher,” she whispered into the void.

Venn’s fading imprint pulsed. “Some things… should be forgotten.”

Liora hesitated. Colony records depended on him. Without his insight, they might never understand the Reef’s strange, self-repairing structures.

Still, she felt his will resisting her. In this place, memories formed bedrock. But what if some truths eroded rather than built?

She disconnected, leaving Venn’s thoughts to dissolve into the lattice. As she stepped into the freezing dawn, she pondered: perhaps survival wasn’t just about what was kept—but what was let go.
