Fractured Lattice

The wind howled through the glass corridors of Prism Station, a research outpost suspended in Saturn’s rings. Dr. Elwen Voss adjusted her visor, peering at the mineral samples embedded with strange crystalline lattice structures—unnaturally precise, as if engineered.

Her assistant, a semi-organic AI named Lioris, pulsed with quiet urgency. “Dr. Voss, the newest scans indicate self-replication.”

Elwen’s breath hitched. If true, this was no ordinary mineral but a form of silicon-based life. And they had already harvested it.

The station trembled. The ring particles shifted faster, forming unnatural patterns—a reaction to their intrusion. Was this intelligence? A warning?

Elwen hesitated. Prism’s funding relied on discovery, extraction. Lioris’ synthetic fingers brushed the nearest specimen. “Perhaps life is not ours to take,” he murmured.

Through the station’s glass, the rings reconfigured—a message, or an ultimatum. Elwen made her choice. She reached for the emergency release lever.
