Sentient Surge

Dr. Sienne Orlo logged her final note before sealing the specimen chamber. The glacier-city of Veyla, suspended over an ocean crevasse, had been her home for nine years, mapping deep-sea biomes through AI neuro-links. But tonight, her connection glitched.

The Cephaloforms, the jelly-like sentients she studied, pulsed erratically in their tanks. Something was coming. The AI, parsing her thoughts, whispered warnings of structure displacement.

Then the ice cracked.

Sirens blared as Veyla tilted. Sienne lunged for the data core—decades of research—but hesitated. The Cephaloforms quivered, their bioluminescence flickering one word in translation: *Help*.

She smashed the containment locks. The creatures surged free. As Veyla collapsed into the abyss, glowing tendrils wrapped around her waist, lifting her toward the surface.

Drifting with them into the dawn, she realized—she had been studying intelligence, but never recognized sentience. Until it saved her.
