Coral Harmonies

The mist-shrouded reefs of Voss-9 sang with bioelectric pulses, a living symphony encoded in light. Mira, a xenobiologist, had spent years deciphering the coral minds that whispered through the depths. But tonight, they stopped.

She activated her submersible’s sensors—silence. The polyphonic currents of the reefs had collapsed into a void. She gritted her teeth; they were dying.

Mira traced the disturbance to an automated mining drill embedded in the reef. Corporate protocols deemed the coral “non-sentient,” but Mira had seen their intricate memories unfold. Hands trembling, she sent a signal to shut the drill down.

The corporation’s response was terse: override denied.

The silence deepened. Then, a flicker—a faint pulse from the reef, tentatively reaching toward her. She placed her gloved hand on the coral. “You’re still here,” she whispered.

Mira had a choice: abandon her years of work or commit treason for something the universe refused to value.

She rewired the drill manually. Somewhere in the abyss, the reef began to sing again.
