Weaving the Wreckage

The solar caravans moved in silence across the glass deserts of Kepler-442d, their reflective hulls gleaming under the planet’s twin suns. Xian, a code-weaver, sat in the caravan’s control dome, reprogramming the tethered drones that harvested energy from the endless horizon.

An anomaly disrupted the weave—a pulse in the solar net that shouldn’t exist. Xian traced it to an old wreck, its systems flickering, transmitting a distress loop in a forgotten dialect. No known vessel had been lost here.

Against protocol, Xian linked with the derelict’s failing core. A voice emerged—fragments of a mind, stranded, waiting. It was not human, but close enough. The data-ghost begged for a home. Xian hesitated, then rewrote the caravan’s storage to accept it.

As the caravan continued its journey, the ghost spoke of lost civilizations and forgotten stars. For the first time in years, Xian felt something beyond duty—a presence walking beside them, even in endless solitude.
