The emerald-lit cavern pulsed with magic. Elara pressed her palm to the ancient stone altar, feeling the hum of the Heart of Vael beneath it. The crystal shard she sought lay ensnared in silver roots, its light flickering weakly. Without it, the barrier protecting her kingdom from the skyborn warlords would shatter.
A roar echoed through the chamber. The serpent guardian, its opalescent scales shimmering, uncoiled from the shadows. Elara raised her staff, channeling the storm’s fury. Lightning cracked from the runes along its shaft, but the serpent’s magic swallowed the strike. She lunged forward, slicing through the tangle of roots while evading the beast’s snapping maw.
The shard came free—magic surged through her veins. Turning, she thrust her staff into the ground. The cavern quaked, sending the guardian into the abyss. As Elara emerged, the storm outside mirrored her triumph—the war was not yet won, but Vael had a chance.
