The moonlight shimmered on the crystalline trees of Vaelithis as Elaryn pressed her palm to the frozen gate. The ancient sigils flared, resisting her presence. She exhaled, summoning the fire within her veins. Flames licked over her fingertips, melting the ice-lock reluctantly. The gate groaned open.
Inside, the Heart of Winter pulsed atop its pedestal, its bluish light casting eerie shadows of the frost-touched pillars. If she could claim it, her people would survive the endless frost.
A roar shattered the silence. The guardian, an ice-wrought leviathan, uncoiled from the darkness. Elaryn dove, spinning through the air, fire trailing in an arc. The beast lunged, but she thrust both hands forward. Searing heat clashed against frigid breath, ice cracking beneath their battle.
With a final surge, she grasped the Heart. Warmth burst outward, the leviathan dissolving into mist. The frost on the world melted, and Elaryn knelt, breathing hard. The dawn rose, golden and victorious.
