Sporebound Memories

Dr. Lian adjusted her mask, the air thick with luminous spores. The archives beneath Vex-9’s fungal towers were ancient, holding humanity’s lost histories in bio-etched mycelium. She traced her gloved fingers over the pulsating strands, coaxing them to reveal a forgotten era.

Behind her, the spores congealed, forming a humanoid figure. “Why do you seek the past?” it whispered.

Lian hesitated. Earth’s collapse had erased so much. Here, among alien fungi acting as organic memory banks, she had a chance to restore what was lost.

But the entity pulsed with concern. “Some knowledge should not return.”

Lian paused. The archives contained blueprints—technology that had poisoned Earth. She had the power to bring back what was forgotten… or let memories dissolve in the spores.

Exhaling, she deactivated her scanner. Some things were better left buried. The past would remain where it belonged—as echoes in the dark.
