The rust-choked turbines of the Derelict Fields groaned as Elya knelt beside the broken drone. Once, these wind farms powered a thousand colony domes; now, they were grave markers. She traced the drone’s serial number—her father’s work, long abandoned.
Her wrist scanner detected an anomalous pulse. Something still lived here. She followed the signal into a turbine’s hollowed base and found a maintenance bot looping the same repair sequence, its voice rasping: “Restoring function… restoring function…” The air smelled of scorched circuits.
Elya hesitated. Colony law said to salvage, not restore. But something about the bot’s repetition felt… lonely. With a few tweaks, she rerouted its failing power, stabilizing it. Its optical lens flickered. “Thank you.”
For the first time in years, something manmade existed here without decay. Elya exhaled, watching the turbine shudder back to life. Perhaps, even among ruins, connection was still possible. She walked on, leaving the light spinning behind her.
