Frostbound Legacy

The last glacier on Venus groaned beneath Dr. Elira Vasquez’s boots. She adjusted her oxygen mask, her thermal suit struggling against the rising heat. She was the last cryo-geologist here. The corporate terraformers had deemed these ice deposits obsolete. Soon, they would melt the final remnants of Venus’s ancient past.

As she placed her hand on the ice, a vibration pulsed beneath her fingertips. A pocket of water trapped for eons. Inside, something moved.

A xenobiotic researcher once, she recognized the flickering, bioluminescent shapes—a dormant microbial civilization, thriving against Venus’s suffocating past. If the corporations continued, they’d be wiped out.

Her comm pinged. Evacuation orders. She hesitated, then extracted a single vial. A seed of something unknown, something that had endured longer than anyone imagined.

As she boarded the last shuttle off-world, she thought: what would evolve from this? What legacy did humanity have, if not preserving something older than itself?
