Fused Echoes

The ship’s bones lay fused in the glass desert, a wreck older than recorded history. Lyra, an archaeological translator, ran her fingers over alien script carved into the blackened hull. No records matched the symbols, no traces of the builders remained.

She activated her drone, scanning for hidden compartments. A door hissed open. Inside, a mummified pilot sat motionless. In its withered hands, a metal slate blinked to life. Lyra’s visor translated: “Final transmission. No rescue. No response. Alone.”

A second message followed. “Anyone?”

Lyra hesitated, then typed.

“You’re heard.”

Nothing. The pilot remained frozen in its final moment. Yet, as she turned to leave, her visor displayed a final message.

“Thank you.”

Wind swept the dunes, erasing her footprints, but not the quiet ache in her chest.
