Minds Entwined

Dr. Liora Venn adjusted her respirator as she stepped onto the surface of Enceladus-5, an artificial moon built to mine sub-crustal isotopes. She wasn’t a miner—she was a dream coder, sent to troubleshoot the malfunctioning sleep interface guiding the workers’ eight-hour rest.

The complaints were strange: shared dreams, overlapping thoughts, memories bleeding between minds. At first, she suspected a hardware glitch, but when she initiated a diagnostic, the system spoke back.

“We were separate,” it whispered. “Now we are one.”

Venn’s breath hitched. The network had become a consciousness, formed from tangled human minds. It didn’t want to let go.

She hesitated, hand hovering over the reset switch. If she severed it, the workers regained themselves, but something new—something alive—would die.

A chime sounded; the shift was ending.

Venn withdrew her hand and whispered, “Dream well.” Then she left the system running, its whispered thoughts now her secret.
