Arin’s boots crunched on the frost-hardened ground as he traversed the Vale of Whispers, shadowed by crystalline spires that hummed with unearthly magic. His dagger pulsed faintly in his grip, its copper blade etched with runes that drank the light. Ahead, a faint glow marked the Heartwood Tree—a gnarled titan born of the First Age. Its sapphire leaves whispered secrets to the wind, and at its base, the Wyrmstone glimmered, locked in the roots’ embrace. The stone could mend the fractured Veil that kept the Netherkin at bay, but it demanded a trade: a piece of the wielder’s soul.
The shadows rippled behind him, and Arin spun as two Netherkin emerged, their elongated limbs twisting unnaturally. With a guttural roar, they lunged, their claws slicing through frost and air. Arin dove, the dagger flaring brighter as it sank into one of the creatures. It shrieked, dissolving into ash. But the second struck, black ichor staining his side. Gritting his teeth, he pressed on.
Reaching the Heartwood, he tore the Wyrmstone free. Its power seared through him, yet he held steady, offering the stone his memories of home. The Veil mended instantly, sealing the Netherkin beyond, but when he turned to retrace his steps, the ache of what he had forgotten hollowed him. Still, the realm would endure, even if his heart wouldn’t.
